GOOLOO A9 Ultra : GOOLOO
I’ve tried a lot of jump starters over the years, but there is one thing that I’ve always wanted in one: a jump starter with an air compressor onboard. GOOLOO has released this very type of jump starter/air compressor called the A9 Ultra. They offered to send me a sample for the purpose of this review, so that I could provide my thoughts and experience with the product, which I will do my best here on this review.
The GOOLOO A9 Ultra is a massive 6000A portable jump starter that doubles as an onboard air compressor. In addition to that, it can be used a power station, providing 100 Watt-hours of energy. It’s a massively-capable jump starter that is really useful to keep in your vehicle should an on-the-road emergency occur.
The A9 Ultra comes with everything you see here, which all fits into the protective case. I really like the form factor of this jump starter because it is more wide than tall. Designed with a rectangular shape and a top-carrying handle, this device is portable yet secure. The solid base ensures stability whether you are jump-starting a vehicle or running the air compressor. I’ve had jump starters that had a narrow base, which would vibrate and dance around from the vibrations of the compressor running.
In my driveway, I’ve got two project cars right now. One is my MK1 Audi TT, and the other more recent acquisition is my Porsche 996. I don’t like to work on multiple projects at once because you can never get finished with any single project. Therefore, I’ve put most of my attention on my TT recently while the 996 is sitting in the back collecting cobwebs.
So it’s not surprise when I tried starting the Porsche, the battery was completely dead. A perfect time to use the new GOOLOO A9 Ultra! Normally when you have a battery that is just slightly dead, you can hook up your portable jump starter and start it right up.
However, whenever I’ve had a battery that was totally depleted, I wouldn’t be able to jump start it using a single jump starter (even with the “boost” setting on to up the output voltage to a full 12 volts). I would normally have to hook up two of my 2000A jump starters with the boost setting turned on on both, to be able to jump start my completely dead battery. Because the GOOLOO A9 Ultra is rated at an impresive 6000 amps, it was able to start my completely dead battery right up.
As you can see here, you have a set of jumper cables that plugs into the output port of the jump starter. On the same side, you also have the USB-C port that allows for charging the jump starter but also is an output to charge devices. There is also of course a USB-A port for charging devices as well.
Now for the icing on top: the A9 Ultra is also an air compressor! Simply connect the supplied air hose, set the air pressure, and press the power button to automatically air up your tire to the set pressure. It will turn off automatically since it has an automatic shut-off feature. It’s a lot more convenient than other manual air compressors, since you don’t have to keep an eye on the compressor gauge and stop it on your own. Another nice feature is the built-in 400-lumen LED light that you can set to on or strobe.
The air compressor pumps air quickly. When it starts pumping air, it operates at a high speed, and then when it starts approaching the set air pressure, it cycles down to a lower speed, and then finally an even lower speed before it comes to a stop. This is a nice feature as it gives you some peace of mind since the pump automatically shuts off when it gets to your desired air pressure.
Something that I did not like was that their air hose was just long enough to reach the valve stem if it was located at the top of the wheel. I’d imagine you’d have to hold the air compressor if you were going to pump up tires on a lifted vehicle where the valve was at the top of the wheel. However, on normal cars, you should be able to reach the valve stem in most cases.
A feature that I think is pretty cool is the ability to store specific air pressures for your car, motorcycles, bikes, balls, or even custom. Just cycle through the presets and start pumping. One thing I would have liked to see is an air hose attachment for Presta valves, which are the kind of valves you see on road bikes. The provided air hose attachment defaults to pump Shrader valves which are common on car tires and on non-road bikes.
The GOOLOO A9 Ultra is a highly capable jump starter because it is so powerful and yet so versatile. I can see this being a necessity for anyone who wants to keep this in their car as an emergency device. It is super-helpful if you get stranded and need a jump, pump up a repaired flat tire, use as a power bank, or even have as an emergency light. Another way you could use this which is how I plan to use it as, is to keep it in my garage to use for jumping batteries on my project cars at home, as well as pump up the tires of my bikes in the garage.
