Dyson Vacuum Battery Adapter: Amazon
One of the best things I’ve had done to my garage was having an epoxy floor installed. After getting it installed, I love spending time working on stuff in the garage. The floor is comfortable, protected, and looks amazing. The floor does need to be cleaned on a regular basis, so I run my vacuum across the whole floor and then mop it to get it fully cleaned.
I normally have my Dyson V7 Vacuum Cleaner mounted to the wall in the garage; the wall mount also allows the vacuum to charge as well. Over the many years of owning the vacuum, the battery life has gone down gradually. For a long time, the battery could only run on the regular setting for about 10-15 minutes, while max suction runs for 5 minutes max. At long last, the battery completely died on me and would no longer hold a charge.

I could have changed out the Dyson battery with another Dyson one, but it would be pricey. After doing some research, I discovered that you can buy an adapter to install on your Dyson vacuum, which would accept a power tool lithium ion battery. Since I already own DeWalt power tools and have several 20V batteries around, I figured it would be worth installing one of these power tool battery adapters on my Dyson vacuum cleaner.
If you have a different model Dyson vacuum cleaner, you can find a battery adapter specific to that model, which will accept your given battery tool brand. If you search for one, look it up by your battery model and your Dyson vacuum model. For example, I have a Dyson V7 and plan to use the DeWalt lithium ion batteries with it, so I searched for, “Dyson V7 Vacuum DeWalt Battery Adapter”.

This is what the battery adapter looks like. You plug the adapter into the vacuum (after removing the old Dyson battery), and then plug your power tool battery right into the adapter.
To remove the old Dyson battery, use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the (3 qty) screws from the vacuum. On my Dyson Animal V7, it has one screw on the back, and two more on the bottom side of the battery. To access the two screws at the bottom of the battery, you’ll need to pull the filter out, which drops the bottom door for access to the screws. The old Dyson battery can now be pulled out of the vacuum.

The battery adapter plugs right into the vacuum as shown. You will then reinstall the (3 qty) screws that come with the adapter.

Now, you simply plug your tool battery right into the adapter to use. With the battery plugged in, the whole vacuum unit is slightly heavier and bulkier around the handle than the original setup.

The big benefit you have now is that you have a lot more power, and it lasts a whole lot longer than it did before. You can even run on max suction for a very long time. Another improvement is that if you ever do run out of battery, you can just swap out the battery and get right back to vacuuming again. With the original integrated Dyson battery, if the battery runs out, you must recharge the battery which means you have to wait until it charges before vacuuming again.

A big downside of the adapter however, is that it will no longer mounts onto your original Dyson wall mount. I actually like this mount a lot because it allows you to mount the vacuum up on the wall, and charge it at the same time. It also has some mounts for the other attachments you have. I wish that the battery adapter was made in a way that would allow the vacuum to fit back onto the mount so you didn’t have to scrap the original mount.

I may have to find a mount that holds the Dyson Vacuum (with its new battery adapter) along with the various attachments that it uses. If anyone has a recommendation for how to store the Dyson with the battery adapter mounted, I would love to hear it. Otherwise, I will update this post in the future if I find a better option than just resting the vacuum up against the corner wall in the garage.
Aside the issue with storing the Dyson vacuum with its new battery adapter, I am really glad that I was able to install the battery adapter so I didn’t have to throw out my trusty Dyson V7. I love that I can snap on a lithium ion power tool battery and have it run at its highest setting for a long time. I can also swap out the battery if I need to continue vacuuming. I highly recommend getting one of these battery adapters if you already have power tool batteries that you can use.
