I always do my own oil changes, so I get to save money on labor. But, I’m also able to take pride in doing the work myself, while knowing that it’s going to be done correctly. In addition to saving money for not having to pay for labor, I like to find deals on motor oil and stock up on them. Each manufacturer has their own price points and you may have your preference for brand of motor oil, but I’ll lay out the best deals that I’ve come across this year. I regularly update this post so that you have the latest and greatest deals that can find on motor oil.
Motor oil has really changed a lot over the years. We’ve mostly moved over from conventional oils, over to synthetic blend or full synthetic motor oils, resulting in greater engine efficiency, better performance, and longer intervals between oil changes. There will always be personal preference for motor oil brand and type, but my recommendation is simply to always go by what your owner’s manual or service manual recommends for your specific year, make, and model.
Going above and beyond with your motor oil choice sometimes is unnecessarily expensive and not always better. Putting full synthetic oil in your vehicle when it calls for synthetic blend may not exactly cause harm to your vehicle, but going with the manufacturer’s recommendation might save you money in the long run. It also usually guarantees you with the safest oil type as the recommendation is coming straight from the manufacturer.
I feel that the deals for motor oils has dwindled over the past few years. We don’t have too many promotions in the form of rebates anymore. If manufacturers do have these promotions, they usually pair them with oil change services or other products like oil filters and wiper blades. They also tend to have a lot of rules attached to them and the rebate can always be denied at the promoter’s discretion.
For these reasons, I think at this time in 2024, the best deals are mostly found either online or in-store if there is a sale. Online prices generally are better, although sometimes the shipping costs might negate or outweigh the savings for being sold online. I believe that the best deals at this moment is either the Kirkland Signature Motor Oil from Costco when they are on sale or the Pennzoil Pennzoil Platinum Rewards Promotion if you can find a good pricing from a participating retailer.
How to Get the Best Deals on Motor Oil
Before we could easily buy motor oil online, you’d just go into the local auto parts store, pick up a circular at the front, and take advantage of whatever oil deal is available that week. I guess technically you could do that now too, but there’s a lot of options online as well. Unfortunately with purchasing in-store, you’re limited to what deal is available at the time.
I’ve also noticed that a lot of times the motor oil is packaged with some oil filter that they’ve pre-selected for you. Sometimes, the specific oil filter that fits your specific vehicle isn’t even available in-store, which just makes the whole process frustrating. Or, the oil is packaged with windshield wipers as a bundle “deal”. If you’re not interested in other products and just want to buy oil by itself, you might be limited in options for finding a good deal.
Right now, the best deals on motor oil are either through limited time sales, or in the form of a rebate. The rebates are probably the better deal of the two, but it usually limits the amount of oil you can buy and you have to go through the trouble of processing the rebate and waiting for the refund to come through. As of April of 2024, here is what I think are the best motor oil deals that are available to you.
Kirkland Signature Motor Oil from Costco
For the Kirkland Signature brand of motor oil from Costco, they do go on sale every so often and you can find them for an incredible price after the instant rebate whether you buy in-store or online. The Kirkland brand of motor oil has an API rating of API SN PLUS, which is the same you’ll find with most any brand of motor oil out on the market today.
In fact, Kirkland Signature (Costco), AmazonBasics (Amazon), and Super Tech (Walmart) are motor oils that are all manufactured by Warren Distribution, Inc. These oils are comparable to the bigger brands such as Mobil1, Castrol, and others, yet have the same API rating at a fraction of the cost. The nice thing about these motor oils is that at their original price, they are already reasonably-priced so you don’t have to wait until it’s on sale unless you want a killer deal.
In my opinion, one of the best deals out right now is the Kirkland Signature motor oil from Costco when they’re on sale. At the time of this post there is a sale at Costco.com where you can buy a 4-pack of 5-Quart Kirkland Motor Oil for $64 ($80 regular price – $16 discount). This comes out to $3.20/Quart. If you go in-store, you can usually find it for a bit cheaper as the price tends to be lower in-store due to shipping & handling costs.
Another option at the time of this writing is buying the bulk single Quart oil. This Kirkland Signature Motor Oil is sold in a 12-pack of single Quart containers for $40 ($50 regular price – $10 discount). This comes out to $3.33/Quart.
Amazon: AmazonBasics Full Synthetic, Synthetic Blend, Conventional
Costco: Kirkland Signature Full Synthetic
Walmart: Super Tech Motor Oils
Pennzoil Platinum Rewards Promotion
This was one of my favorite promotions in the past because they consistently offer a every year. It’s fallen down my list of motor oil deals because of a couple reasons.
The major reason is that unlike previous years, online purchases from Amazon.com and Walmart.com will now no longer qualify for this 2024 promotion. This matters because the best deals on this oil were usually found on these two sites, and if you paired that with the rebate, you would get a slick deal. Now, you might still get a good deal if you can find a good price at one of the remaining participating retailers.
The other reason that I’m not as much a fan of this rebate as I was used to is that people have said that the Pennzoil Promotion historically has been kind of picky. So for a number of reasons (sometimes for unknown reasons), the rebate has been denied and the customer is left with having paid for a full-priced product.
Here are the major details of the 2024 Pennzoil Rebate:
- Receive a $25 digital Gift Card for the purchase of either 10qty 1-Quart bottles or 2qty 5-Quart bottles of qualifying Pennzoil Synthetic Motor Oil.
- Offer valid from 2/1/24 – 9/30/24.
- Valid withparticipating retailers (not valid with online orders from Amazon or Walmart; in-store purchases at Walmart qualify).
- Limited to one (1) per person, household or address (email and physical).
Qty & Container | Pennzoil Motor Oil Type |
---|---|

10 or more 1-Quart bottles 2 or more 5-Quart bottles | Platinum® Full Synthetic |
10 or more 1-Quart bottles 2 or more 5-Quart bottles | Platinum® High Mileage Full Synthetic |

Mobil1 Motor Oil
Mobil1 oil continues to be one of the higher-priced motor oils out there and unfortunately there are just no good promotions at this time, in my opinion. Prior to the year 2024, I’ve taken advantage of Mobil1 motor oil rebates, but as of this time there are very few promotions to be found.
There are some rebates that are bundled with getting your oil changed at a particular shop, or if the oil is purchased with a set of wiper blades. I purposely don’t include any oil deals that aren’t standalone oil deals–if they’re deals paired with other products or services, they’re not included on this article.
Castrol, Valvoline, Quaker State, Motorcraft
These other big name brands typically don’t offer too many deals on their motor oil. They do sometimes have promotions that are bundled with oil change packages, or when paired with other products like oil filters or wiper blades if you purchase at certain stores. Again, I don’t include those types of “bundled” promotions on this post.
Since Castrol, Valvoline, Quaker State, and Motorcraft tend to be more economically priced, promotions aren’t really all that common. So, you can pick any day of the week and go purchase their motor oils online and find that they’re already reasonably priced.
I’ve generally found the best prices for these brands of motor oil (including Pennzoil) to be on online at Amazon.com, or Walmart.com. Take advantage of the coupons or Subscribe-and-Save prices at Amazon if you can. In-store prices at Walmart can be good too. There are also times where I’ve found prices reduced at local auto parts stores or home improvement stores, but that’s a rare occurrence.
My Advice on the Current Motor Oil Deals
The landscape of motor oil deals has changed quite a bit to where we’re at now. Because it has changed so much, I’ve started to move away stocking up on motor oil during promotions since there aren’t too many great rebate deals anymore. What I do now is stock up on Kirkland Signature Motor Oil from Costco when it’s on sale, and buy one of the economical (but reputable) brand oils if I need it right away.
Here’s my advice. The first thing you should do however, is start at your vehicle. What does your owner’s manual recommend? Start there and decide what brand/type of oil you need. Then, check if any promotions exist for what you’re looking for and if not, find the best sale price you can. No need to get the most expensive oil out there if it’s not needed. If you can’t find any sales, just buy the motor oil and get on with your oil change. Your time is valuable. Sometimes spending too much time to save a few dollars just isn’t worth it.

Ok Scott What’s your go to motor oil for a 4th Gen 4Runner v6 sr5 with 260k?
I’m currently running AMES full synthetic @ $100.00 every 6k
Hi Damien, my go-to has always been a Synthetic Blend 5W-30, usually labeled as “high mileage”. I go this route because I don’t want to go full synthetic and risk leaking of any engine seals since I have a high-mileage vehicle. I also want that increased oil life so I don’t have to change my oil every 3k miles. I usually stock up on oil during these sales/rebates such as the one listed in this post; unfortunately oil deals are not as good as they used to be.
