How to Program a Toyota Keyless Entry Remote – Toyota 4Runner

It’s easy to program and use a remote key for your Toyota vehicle (make sure to check online to see if a blank Toyota keyless entry remote will work for your particular vehicle). I have done it on both a 4th gen Toyota 4Runner and now a 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner and it works great. The remote costs just over $10 and you can program it yourself. Here are some links to blank remotes and also the instructions I used.

From eBay:

Programming Remote Key – Instructions:

While sitting in car:

  • Key is out of ignition
  • Driver door open, all other doors closed
  • Driver door unlocked
  • Insert key into ignition and pull straight back out

Perform the following within 40 seconds:

  • Lock then unlock power door locks 5 times going at an even pace and speed
  • Close then open drivers door

Perform the following within 40 seconds:

  • Lock then unlock power door locks 5 times (again)
  • Insert key into ignition
  • Turn key to ON then to OFF
  • Turn key to ON then to OFF (again)
  • Remove key from ignition

Within 3 seconds, the power door locks will lock then unlock automatically on its own. This indicates that the ECU has entered programming mode.

Perform the following within 40 seconds:

  • Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote at the same time for 1 second
  • Press and hold the lock button for 2 seconds

Within 3 seconds, the power door locks will lock then unlock once. This indicates the ECU has successfully been programed. Repeat for each transmitter that will be used for the vehicle.

*if at any point the power door locks don’t cycle by themselves, start over from the beginning again.
